I have a perfectly tight ball of string (no air gaps). The ball of string is 2 meters in diameter and the string itself has a diameter of 2cm. How long is the piece of string?

The secret here is in calculating the volume of the ball of string.

The ball of string’s volume is ⁴/₃ π r³ = ⁴/₃ π cubic meters.

This volume should be equal to the volume of the length of string itself which is equal to: π r² x l = π (0.01)² x l = 0.0001 π l

Rearranging to get the length:

0.0001 π l = ⁴/₃ π

l = ⁴/₃ × ¹/_0.0001 = 13, 333.33 meters or 13.33 kilometers
