🧮 Answer - Maths Puzzle 🧮

2/3

This intuitive answer to this famous problem first posed by Joseph Bertrand is ½ but this is actually incorrect.

The probability that a gold coin would be initially chosen is:

  • 1 for the box with 2 gold coins

  • ½ for the box with 1 gold and 1 silver coin

  • 0 for the box with 2 silver coins

Therefore, given that you pick a gold coin first, you are twice as likely to have chosen the box with 2 gold coins in as the one with 1 gold and 1 silver coin. This means you have a 2/3 chance of the next coin being gold.
