Digging Holes

A man is digging a hole. He is 5ft 10inches tall.

At the start his head is still above ground. He will continue to dig until the hole is 3 times as deep as it currently is.

At the end, his head will be twice as far below ground as it was above ground when he started. How deep is the hole at the end?

You are in a room with three light switches, each of which controls one of three light bulbs in another room. You can only go to the room with the bulbs once. How can you tell which switch controls which bulb?

🧮 Answer - Maths Puzzle 🧮

We will use the following notation:

• D = Depth of the hole at the start

• h = Height of the person digging the hole

• x = distance between the ground and the top of the persons head at the start.

At the start: D + x = h

At the end 3D = 2x + h

Solving the simultaneous equations:

x = h - D => 3D = 2(h-D) + h = 2h - 2D = 3h - 2D

5D = 3h => D = ³/₅ h

At the end, the depth of the hole is 3D => ⁹/₅ h

We know that h = 5ft 10inches. Which leads to a depth of 10ft 6 inches

Turn on one switch and wait a few minutes. Then turn on another switch and go into the room with the bulbs. The bulb that is on and warm corresponds to the first switch you turned on; the bulb that is on and cool corresponds to the second switch; the off bulb corresponds to the third switch.
